Brought to you by tinyBuild, new developer Team Shifty offers up their first project with Mr. Shifty, an action adventure available for PC and Nintendo Switch. Mr. Shifty is fast-paced, top-down, teleporting action in the vein of games like Hotline Miami, and a welcome addition to this year’s indie lineup.
The stand out mechanic of this game is the ability to teleport, or shift, allowing you to dodge bullets, confuse enemies, and just overall feel like a brawling badass. You undertake an epic heist, utilizing your shifting, melee combat, and environmental items to avoid traps and defeat enemies. The game has a partially destructible environment, which I highly recommend destroying as much as possible. It’s just more fun that way.
Levels start off fairly easy, but swiftly ramp up the difficulty, requiring critical thinking and quick reactions to seamlessly clear a room. One shot will kill you, so impeccable timing is essential and it takes some practice to beat harder levels. Mr. Shifty definitely isn’t a game to play for an amazing story, but that’s okay because punching bad guys is really all you need to know. Mastery of this game is exhilarating, and the mix of combat and shifting combine for satisfying gameplay.
The music is frenetic and fun, although it can get repetitive after a long period of playing. While some added musical runtime wouldn’t hurt, what’s there is great and succeeds in setting the pace for this game as well as complementing the aesthetic. The game is visually well designed, with a bit of a comic book feel to the artwork. Paired with a simple design for gameplay befitting the top down angle, the overall feel offers plenty of indie charm.
While Mr. Shifty doesn’t have much replay value, and the game runs on the short side at under 10 hours, the overall enjoyment makes it well worth playing for the $14.99 price tag. That said, you can pick it up right now on Steam for 10% off running through April 20th. If you managed to snag a Nintendo Switch, you can also pick Mr. Shifty up on the eShop and take all the action on the go.
